Cocker Spaniels

One of the most recognisable breeds, the Cocker Spaniel is a popular dog and makes a very good pet for an active family. One of the ‘flushing’ breeds, the working Cocker is used for searching in undergrowth for game birds, causing them to fly up for the gun. In fact the name ‘Cocker’ is taken from the Woodcock that they would flush extensively in the past. Even if you have the show type Cocker this trait will become evident when you walk your dog in the woodland; he will spend all his time sniffing and crashing through the undergrowth trying to find something to flush.

Labrador Retrievers

The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world, and is consistently listed within the top five most popular pedigree dog breeds here in the UK.

Labradors enjoy this high level of popularity as both pets and working dogs for a variety of reasons; they are great all-rounders, very intelligent, take well to training, and are generally very personable. They are at their happiest when leading busy, active lives, and are renowned for their love of children, making them eminently suitable as family pets. The Labrador Retriever is classed as a retriever-type gun dog, and was originally bred and trained as a working dog, to assist hunters are retrieving downed birds and other animals, both on land and in the water. They have a keen sense of smell, and also make good tracking dogs.

Cockapoos

A cockapoo is a dog produced from the crossing of a poodle and a cocker spaniel, and/or another cockapoo and either a cocker spaniel and a poodle.

This crossing is popular because it is intended to combine all of the best traits of both breeds-the intelligence, lively nature and cheerful, outgoing traits of both breeds, while also strengthening the genetic diversity of the dog in question, thanks to the benefits of hybrid vigour.

The coat of the cockapoo is one of its most popular traits-ideally, a cockapoo should inherit the poodle coat in large part, which gives them a curled or wavy coat that does not shed heavily, making them a good pick for people with allergies.
